A member of the Lily family, this plant grows in headwater streams, Atlantic White Cedar Swamps, and other forested wetlands. Where they grow, the water table is at or just below the surface, fluctuating only slightly seasonally and they are usually associated with lateral groundwater movement. A federally-protected species, with over half of the known populations occuring in NJ. Characterized as an S3/G3 status. Flower is sweetly fragrant, recalling Azalea viscosum (Swamp Azalea). Finding them is quite a challenge. This population is found deep in the swamp and walking conditions are tricky at best!
