Visiting former headhunters in Arunachal Pradesh
This gallery shows some Wancho people from Tirap District in Arunachal Pradesh, in Northeast India.
You need a permit that allows you to go to AP for 10 days and then another permit for Tirap District. Often this permit is denied. We were lucky to be allowed to visit this remote area, where people still retain their traditional lifestyle.
The Wanchos are related with the Nagas in Nagaland and like them they were headhunters. Their tattoos remind of this tradition that ended (more or less) 60/70 years ago. Although the British had forced nearly all villages to bury their skulls, they proudly showed us some skulls that they still keep in a few "morungs" (men-houses).
