Not a pretty picture, but it happened last week, on Thursday, October 25, just a few days after I photographed a window of this building (see my most recent Dreamscapes photo). As a result of neglect over the years, the roof of this historic building weakened, and collapsed after several days of heavy rain. Confederate Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson was a guest at the hotel in 1861. His stay was referenced in a scene from the 2003 movie "Gods and Generals." The hotel ended up in its run-down condition after a century of history. The present owners did not carry on with the renovation, and it was neglected. Let's hope that somehow, it will survive, and once again be a center of activity in old town Winchester.
