A wall 21 km long encloses this enormous (819 hectare) park.
It was once the royal game park and is part of the magnificent National Palace of Mafra.
Today it is still possible to hunt deer and game here, although the ecology of the area
is now carefully controlled. Apart from deer and wild boar, many other animal species
live here. There are wolves, foxes, civet cats, mongooses and a variety of birds,
including the rare Bonelli’s Eagle. There are guided tours round the park on foot
or in a small train. There is a wide variety of activities to choose from, including
orienteering, photography, archery, horse-riding, mountain biking, horse and cart
rides and even donkey rides for those visitors who enjoy a bumpy trip down memory lane.
