The giant tortoises, which are also called Galapagos tortoises, are endangered due to introduced species on San Cristobal island, especially goats, rats and cats. The park rangers pick up eggs and take them to the breeding center where they stay for two years before being released to the wild. At that size they are no longer threatened by the introduced species.
