It looked like a rainbow near the sunrise. Impossible! Rainbows can only be seen by looking away from the sun, directly opposite.
I stopped on the shoulder of Hwy 101 for a photo of this phenomenon and then it changed enough that I could see the rest of the halo that that bright sundog rainbow effect was a part of.
For those who know it, yes, that is the landmark tree of Smith River.
