Big Red and Elvis

The BLM began a round up today of the mustangs this gallery. They plan to gather all 159 of them, put 129 back into the desert and adopt out the remaining animals. Although I have never communicated with BLM officials directly, my guess is that the round up is aimed at population control; the 64 females to be released again into the wild will first be given an injection of an infertility drug.

The two stallions in this frame might never make it back home to the range. They are both quite old, too old to maintain a family group of mares. It is very possible that they would be included in the group of 30 mustangs that will be culled and offered to the public for adoption. If no-one wants them, they will be trucked to a mustang facility to 'live out their natural lives'.

I'm guessing you no longer believe a year later that this is what's happening to our wild mustangs when they are rounded up. We know ours in Nevada are being rounded up by the thousands and auctioned to be slaughtered. These two are wonderful old mustangs that should have had the chance to live out their lives in peace. They no longer threaten over population.

They look well. Can you give us any updates on the roundup? Did these two get taken? I HATE THE BLM!!! Wild horses aren't overpopulated. They need to leave the horses alone and get rid of the subsidized cattle and other uses. The helicopter crews make a lot of money. Our tax dollars are being wasted on the BLM's program. Thank you for your beautiful pictures and captions!

Gorgeous image. After reading all your stories I feel as if I know these two. It is good to see them looking so healthy during the winter months. I can't imagine how emotionally frustrating it must be knowing what the BLM intends on doing. My thoughts are with them all and hope to see images of Big Red and Elvis safely back to the Desert soon.

a lovely picture and a relief to know they do eventually stop fighting; sad that man cannot leave anywhere natural. A very long length in the body. great background too
