Very pleasing image, Philip. Perfect blend of all elements : subject, background, shadows, frame. Great !

I saw your original but this is much improved. The lighting really helps.

Phillip - niiice one - much enhanced from no 1. i like that you have the subject so offset from centre, and that your eyes are drawn to the shadow & texture of material. thanx.

Good job Philip. This one's much better than the first version. The pinecone is of course just as nice as before, but the new composition makes it much more interesting to look at. Well done!

Hi Claudio,

Mind a few pointers?! No, in fact I encourage and welcome any help at all. I am going to try a new shot using your suggestions.

Thanks for the link to Geoff's gallery. I have admired his shots at MTF and miss his posts. He has a great style.

Thank you,
Philip Potts

Hi Phil,

Hope you don't mind, if I give you a few pointers...

Although the image is perfectly exposed, it lacks a bit in terms of composition and lighting. I'm not somebody that can really give you much advice on still-life, but I would personally try a shot with the pinecone on a side and with the shadow contributing to the composition. The point of view could be also made lower. The minimalistic white background does work very well in those type of shots.

Take a look at what Geoff did with his Minolta 7hi (before he moved to a 10D) at

http://www.pbase.com/britishbeef/colour_still_life

Many of his shots have a structure that I'm sure would help an entry like yours to stand out. Technically I think that with a white background, and a couple of lights you could achieve something quite nice in that direction.
