Don't know exactly what this was used for. But something to do with turning a train enging around.

See the tracks have long gone. It was nice of them to leave the turntable. Before you know it there will be a railway theme park there.

That's exactly right. It was to turn around a locomotive. Often these turnarounds were in front of an engine house, and the track could be turned to put the enging in line with the appropriate "garage." Odd to see it out in the middle of nowhere like this...
