These are some of the homes located in this Historical district of Peoria.
I was unable to locate anyone that could tell me why it was so named. I know that Peoria was well known in the shine running days for it's strong participation. Mostly for the Chicago area.

I used to live on High Street and this was the area in which the 19th century whiskey barons built their mansions. At the time, Peoria produced more whiskey than any other city in the world. There were 22 distilleries and a number of breweries. This provided more internal revenue tax than any other district in the U.S. House number one in the photos was built by the gentleman who was the major producer of barrels for this industry. I forget his name. "High Wine" refers to one of the stages in whiskey production. Needless to say, Peoria took a major hit from Prohibition and the whiskey industry here never recovered. The last company distilling here was Hiram Walker until it relocated to Arkansas in 1982.
