SPRINGFIELD ARMORY MUSEUM

These pictures are from my recent trip to the Springfield Armory Museum in Springfield Mass. USA.

I was lucky enough to be allowed access to the upper floor or pattern room to view the collection of there Garand and M14 prototypes as well as just about every other issue and or prototype firearm from Colonian days to 1970.

You will also see the lower level or first floor of the museum and these firearms are mostly encased in glass.

The first and last National Armory

Overlooking the Connecticut River in western Massachusetts, Springfield Armory National Historic Site offers the story of the American's first national armory. The large museum, year-round public programs, exhibits, and special events speak of nearly two centuries of pioneering American military arms manufacturing.

I am sad to say though that effective immediately the pattern room shown in these photos are no longer available to the general public for viewing anymore.

I was president of the Friends of the Springfield Armory Museum back in the 1990's. You should see the weapons that are not on display. Don Mundell hollypaw@comcast.net

I found this page by mistake surfing around. A little history: my great grandfather was Robert Lee, the original curator and organizer of this museum (it used to be in another building on Federal Street next to the fence by the road). Yes, I can back this up with several photos of the original exhibits and the parade floats made with the Springfield rifles to look like calliopes. I've been told that the staff at this facility was jealous of Colt in the development and production of the M16. In an effort to get back onto center stage they converted the .223 ammo from stick to ball powder which resulted in the rifles clogging up and killing troops. An investigation determined that this error was no mistake and McNamara shut the place down as the folks that worked there were considered to be dangerous to the U.S. Army.

Very interesting!! I'm planning a trip this summer. I think it's a shame they shut this place down in 1968. I guess Picatinney Arsenal took over small arms development?

This place is highly secured and there is a lot closed circuit surveilance. I use to live in Springfield. Museum is also linked to PD.

Showing millions of dollars of prototype machine guns and battle rifles to complete strangers un armed and alone is right. You think him carrying a firearm in a firearms museum was odd? I say good for him and I dont blame him one bit

Excellent pics, Ive visited when I was young, the most impressive pictures, and sights in person is the huge storage rack display your first picture. Anyone who has ever fired a garand or a springfield 03 knows thats these are some of finest weapons ever period...
