Ruby Mountains

Across half of Elko County, Nevada, running from SW to NE, a magically improbable glaciated range thrusts up out of the flat farmland, one of the fault block uplift mountain ranges that form the "army of caterpillars" noted by Frémont in his explorations of what later became the Western United States. This one is the beloved Ruby Mountains, so named for the garnets that sparkle from the stone substrate. At the east end, high above the crossroad village of Wells, the Angel Creek and Angel Lake campgrounds pull visitors up the steep entry road. South of Elko about 20 miles, a short, gently but insistently uphill drive leads into Lamoille Canyon. Both places are WELL worth visiting!
