It was all of 6°F on the first Saturday of 2013, but Tracey, Wayne and Ruth braved it, and were richly rewarded at Syphon Pond
and the nearby bridge over the Portneuf River. Hoarfrost over a half-inch long had grown onto the vegetation
nearest the water. Animal tracks decorated the river-edge snow, and we saw or heard 10 species of birds, although
none were on the pond, where only a few small circles were free of ice. This is looking south along the Portneuf from the bridge.
I put the sun's reflection at the edge of the ice so I wouldn't be blinded and so I could see the edge sharply. The rising fog kindof obliterates the reflection from trees in the rear, but I didn't care; by that time I was liking the ice edge more anyway.
