Typical Home

Paro Outskirts, Bhutan

This home is the typical architecture throughout the areas we traveled. The ground
floor, especially in rural areas, has room for cattle during the winter and for
storage. The second floor has the living quarters and the third floor is either
an open air area for hay storage or additional rooms.

All homes contain a shrine which may be very elaborate. Outside walls are painted
with various designs, each with a special significance. Common are floral patterns
representing the lotus, cloud whirls, and a set of eight auspicious symbols.
Phallic symbols are common and are believed to ward off evil spirits and are not
fertility symbols as in other cultures.

On the roof of this house, chilies are drying. Chilies are a major ingredient in
Bhutanese food preparation, and they are HOT.
