In my larger 468 liters tank I keep non-Mbuna Malawi cichlids (except of relatively quiet Labidochromis caeruleus).
After exchanging two species and fine-tuning (still work in progress) I keep in there groups of Mylochromis Mchuse, Placidochromis phenochilus Mdoka white lips, Labidochromis caeruleus (Yellow Labs),
Protomelas fenestratus Nkanda yellow belly, trio of Otopharynx lithobates Zimbawe Rock plus single males – Aulonocara Stuartgranti Chilumba, Aulonocara Stuartgranti Hongi, Aulonocara Rubin Red
and Dimidiochromis compressiceps (Malawi eye biter). The latest is a real predator and because of his temperament he might turn out to be a rough companion for the others.
Time will show whether this will work or not. I am optimistic as he is a single and yet relatively quiet as for a predatory cichlid.
Now most of the cichlids range between 10-13 cm except of yellow labs around 8-9 cm, the beautiful Otopharynx lithobates Zimbawe Rock male (my apple of the eye) around 14 cm
and Dimidiochromis compressiceps around 15 cm. All of the clichlids I keep except of Aulonocara Stuartgranti Chilumba and Aulonocara Rubin Red are F1 (first generation after wild fish).
All the species except of Aulonocara Rubin Red live in Lake Malawi in Africa. Aulonocara Rubin Red is a line selectively bred from Aulonocara Stuartgranti Maleri which is naturally living in Lake Malawi.
