Common Stinkhorn & Fly, Phallus impudicus

The common stinkhorn is an unmistakeable fungus due to its foul smell and phallic shape. This mushroom has an innovative spore dispersal method; its odour attracts flies which become coated in the slimy green gleba rich in spores. The common stinkhorn is distributed far and wide - being found on all continents except Antarctica. While immature the stinkhorn has an egg shaped appearance, and is edible. Due to the mushrooms phallic shape this species is infamous in folklore, rather unsurprisingly being suggested by many as an aphrodisiac.
