Fujifilm Finepix HS10 review - Page 12 : Telephoto Shots

720mm at ISO100 (10 fps high speed mode -- focus is rather fast and accurate)	720mm at ISO200 (10 fps high speed mode -- useful for freezing a motion)	720mm at ISO400 -- pretty nice bokeh at the back	720mm at ISO800 -- contrast is good (it was a cloudy day)	720mm at ISO800 (3 fps high speed mode -- LCD display can show photos before taking another one, easier for reframing the pic)

Hi Brijesh, These four cameras are, I think, targetted for a slightly different market group. If you like taking sqaure format photo and love light-painting, FZ100 should be your choice because it offers 1:1 photo format and the longest shutter time (60s). If you need 24mm, HS10 or SX30 should be your choice because other cameras start from 25/26mm.. If you need the most powerful telephoto shot, SX30 should be your choice because it can zoom to 840mm, which is most useful in taking bird photos. If you like to post-process images by raw, HS10 or FZ100 should be your choice because the other two do not capture raw. If you prefer a light gear, P100 should be your choice. HS10 is the heaviest. If you like to take macro shots, all of them are suitable since all of them can focus at a distance as short as 1cm and SX30 even does at 0cm. If you like to take speedy sport photos, you should not choose SX30 since it can only shoot at a speed of 0.6fps. The other 3 cameras can shoot at 10-11fps. Hope the above comments may help. Jacky

hi Jacky,great shots.which one would u recommend-fuji hs10 vs canon sx30 vs nikon p100 vs panasonic fz100.dpreview rates hs10 lower.i mainly take birds,macro,car rally.DSLR is bulky to carry during bike trips,expensive.THANK U

Thanks Jacky, Seem 2 sec for jpg is acceptable for me. Maybe I wrongly set to RAW+JPG, so the saving time run longer and I don't feel good during my last testing. Thanks your useful informations.

Yes, I agree that, when compared to DSLR, the saving time of HS10 is rather slow. From my rough measurement, for single shot, the shutter lag and file storage time is about: (1) jpg shot - 2s (2) raw shot - 5s (3) raw + jpg shots - 7s In continuous shooting mode, the delay is about: (1) jpg (max. 10fps - but only 7 frames could be recorded) - 10s (2) raw (max. 5fps - but only 6 frames could be recorded) - 22s (3) raw + jpg (max 5fps - but only 5 frames could be recorded) - 24s However, I don't think that high speed SD card would help a lot, so long as you use Class 4 or above. If you take movie lots of time, You may choose Class 6.

Hi Jacky, concerns about the light weight for daily use and price, most probably I will take HS10. BTW, I tried to play this camera from shop and feel that the picture saving time little bit long. Do you think high speed SD card really help to speed up the time ?

For landscape and nature shot, HS10 can by no ways win a DSLR (e.g., my Canon EOS 5D), expecially in terms of resolution, dynamic range, start-up time and focus speed, except its fast continuous shooting speed and light weight. I didn't compare HS10 to entry-level DSLR with high zoom lens since I haven't got such combination. If you are a serious landscape and nature photographer, a DSLR is always a good choice. However, if you concern weight more than quality, you may consider HS10. As a "general" rule of thumb in the photography world, the bigger and heavier the camera is, the better the image quality should be. One more point to add, if you really want to have a bridge camera offering nearly the same image quality as DSLR (in base ISO only), Panasonic FZ35 may be your choice, but its lens is only 27-486mm (18X). For higher ISO, the performance by DSLR must always be better due to larger sensor size. Details pls refer here:http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/q110superzoomgroup/

Thank you so much Jacky your professional answer. I do have to take serious consideration on my own habit first. You know, one way I like the HS10 light weight and high ratio zoom but not 100% satisfy the picture quality. May I asking one more question, how you feel the picture quality from HS10 when taking Landscape and nature shot, is it possible to compare with DSLR ?

(1) It is really hard to compare between HS10 and DSLR since they are targeted to different market groups. In terms of image quality and manual control, I don't see that a DSLR would be inferior to HS10. The only advantage of HS10 is its light weight and small size with such a huge zoom range from 24mm to 720mm, which already covers at least 3 lens: 24-105mm, 100-400mm and 600mm. I am a user of SLR for nearly 20 years and has been seeking for a single lens/prosumer camera with wide angle and long zoom capability for daily use. I had Tamron 28-300 in the past but still it is too heavy to be a daily-carry camera. I have been waiting and waiting, from the 10x megazoom era, 20x megazoon era and now 30x megazoom era. It is really a good news for me since HS10 starts from 24mm, which is very useful for taking landscape / architecture photos. (2) For the question of whether to upgrade or not, it all depends on the purpose of your photography. If you are going to learn more basic techniques (e.g., the use of aperture, perspective control, depth of view etc) involved in photography, DSLR should be your choice since it could offer you the widest range of manaul control. However, if you like me, who wants to have a daily-carriable camera, HS10 should be your choice. (3) HS10 is not a camera for serious protrait shots although it can zoom to 720mm because the min. focus distance is 2m. The DoF and bokeh effect could not be comparable to DSLR. In my experience, for head shot or half body shot, 300mm is desirable because the min. focus distance could be shorter, thus resulting in a blurrer background. Despite this, DoF and bokeh effect in macro or super macro shots are quite impressive because you can get closer to the subject to create an even blurrer background. (4) Focus speed is acceptable in properly-lit situations, but rather slow in poorly-lit ones, and sometimes even fail to focus unless you activate the focus assist lamp. Focus assist lamp is not always desirable because it may disturb your subjects. Remember to switch off the focus assist lamp when you take street snapshots. If you always take photos of fast-moving objects, HS10 should not be your choice. (5) HS10 offers Sweep Panorama, Pro low-light Mode, Multi Motion Capture and Motion Remover Mode, which DSLR does not have. (6) Final words: HS10 is good for daily shots, street snapshots, landscape, architecture, close-up, flower and night shots, but not good for protrait, sport, fast-moving objects and baby.

Thanks Jacky your reply. HS10 is a wonderful DC right now in the market, right? What is your comments when comparing with DSLR. I know it is a stupid question that no one will compare with DSLR, but still wants to see your professional comments. As I'm a compact DC user, love to taking picture and wants to upgrade to HS10 or DSLR.

Hi Aguest, HS10 is not a good camera in taking fast moving object. You will be disappointed with the image quality if you intend to use HS10 for such purpose.
