Mike, Thanks for a wonderful Macro Workshop in West Lebanon, NH this past weekend. Not only are you a fabulous Macro Photographer but you are a very gifted teacher as well. Thanks so much for sharing your passion and knowledge of both Macro thru your eyes along with the knowledge of how to get the best shots and then how to bring them to life thru processing them.

The class was over the top!!! Every one that has an interest in Macro or photography in general would benefit from your workshop.

Thanks again,
Debbie Emmons

Bill Varga 09-Jan-2016 22:51
My name is Bill Varga. I photograph most everything. No weddings, no portrait. I do shoot flowers. Under your "Best images of 2015", The very first flower image is something I would very much like to create for some of my images. Post processing is probably very important here.

If you have an e-book or whatever that would help me with this, could you direct me to it.
I live in Canada which makes it difficult for me to afford your workshops but I do feel your work is exceptional.

Thank You
Bill varga

Hey Duke, I am here in Old Car City right now teaching a workshop. OCC is located about 45 mile north of Atlanta, Georgia. Yes I will be offering another workshop here in 2016. Watch my website workshop page for updates.

Thanks Tim, glad you like the images, and keep on that path.
Tim Williams 12-Sep-2015 22:53
Mike, I just watched a video interview of yours and was very excited and intrigued by your position on macro photography and the tendency of (many) to shoot flowers and bugs. However, you're looking for the unique artistic eye that sees contrast, symmetry, or asymmetry, and not so much documentary macro, as creative vision and expression macro photography. As I browse through your galleries I see many similar examples of my own macro style, although yours are exceptional and mine are mediocre at best. You have inspired me to stay with my own macro vision and not be drawn into the every day and mundane, although I still find flowers and bugs interesting... 😉. Thank you ¡

Hi Mike,
Just wanted to say the shot of the back of the blue poppy is perhaps my favorite on my entire Garden Delights Pinterest board. Recently went to an orchid distributor in the Santa Barbara area and got some lovely shots but none as nice as yours. Just beautiful work and just wanted to say "thank you".

Hello Mike, wondering if I could pick your brain about lens. in your video about lens you say you use a tamron 18-270mm 3.5 II vc and for Micro a 90mm micro. I use a Nikon D7100 that came with an 18-55mm 3.5 VRII and a 55-300mm 4.5 VR. My question is other than having to use two lens, picture quality wise could I get the same results. I would also like to stick with Nikon lens and I see they have a 105mm 2.8 IF AF/S VR micro for about $850.00. I'd appreciate any feedback you might have, maybe other folks out there may also be helped. Thank you for your art and your videos. Adios
Mike Moats28-Aug-2014 22:29
Alfredo, that was Nik Software plug ins. You can see other videos there using Nik's Color Efex Pro and Viveza.

I just saw your excellent, Beyond flowers and bugs, video on youtube. I saw that u were using PSE. That's the software that I am currently using PSE10. My question is where did u get the filters for color effects and etc. I suppose they are an add on because my version doesn't have them in the filter menu. Thank u for your help and for your excellent gallery.

I learned of your websites from a local photographer two days ago....what a treasure trove of art, advice, and inspiration! I will spend many hours in each. Your news letter today featured "Reflections" and was of particular interest as "car reflections" have caught my interest (two galleries on pbase). I hope to be at your course in St Augustine. So much to learn.

Mike, I attended your seminar today that you did with Nik software. Excellent photos and great instruction. Are you hosting any online seminars regarding your Textured photos? I'm interested in learning your techniques and my wife is looking for a Christmas present to give me.

Thanks,

Nick Baldwin 23-Aug-2011 21:16
I enjoyed the macro tips about positioning the camera that I saw on my Tamron email.
I do have a question and barring an email address I guess this will have to do.
In the writing you mentioned "focus stacking" please tell me what that is about.
I do have an email address:hope it shows up below.
thanks from a first time viewer
Mike Moats12-Jul-2011 20:34
Hey Bonnie, you do not have to have a macro lens, but you will be limited with your standard lenses on what you can shoot in the workshop. If you can afford a macro lens, go with the Tamron 90mm macro in the Canon mount. It cost online around $459 and tamron is running a $50 rebate. Hope to see you in the boot camp.
Bonnie Schulz 12-Jul-2011 18:01
Hi Mike- I am interested in your Macro Boot Camp three day seminar in Glendale,Colorado on Sep.30-Oct.2. I see you use Nikon equipment but I a have Canon 7D camera. Do I need to have a macro lens for your your class and if so what lens would you suggest for a Canon camera? I do not know enough about macro photography to choose a lens.

Thanks,
Bonnie

Hey Roslyn, don't bother with the 90 as it is to close to what you already have. Go to the loger focal length 180 or the Sigma 150.
Roslyn Pulitzer 08-May-2011 20:03
Mike,
I've recently become acquainted with your beautiful work, and I ordered your book Tiny Landscapes today.
I want to request a suggestion from you; I own a Nikon 105mm macro lens and want to know which additional
lens to purchase..... the 90mm or the 180mm?

Thank you,
Roslyn

Hey Debbie, I would suggest a Tamron 90mm macro for your first lens. It is an excellent sharp shooting lens and one of the least expensive at about $475. I shoot with it a lot. Hope you can make it one day to a macro Boot camp, it's a lot of fun and you will learn a ton.

Mike, impressive work you have here, I like your composition perception and technique.

All the best.
Kim McCann 05-Dec-2009 06:19
Hi, Mr. Moats: First I wanted to say that your photos are exquisite. I've always so loved really looking into, around, and behind nature's simple beauty so I can drink it all in, and you certainly allow the viewer to do so with your work. I thank you for providing that journey through your slide shows. :-)

I have become enveloped in my love for this this type of photography over the past few years, especially since my 14 year old twins no longer allow me to photograh them! However, no one else seems to be interested in cracks in the pavement or a dead flower, some things in which I may find such beauty, so I don't really know what to do with them, except take up room on my hard drive. I have 100's & 100's of my own shots and would appreciate being critiqued on some of those. However, I just get the pictures - I don't know how - other than intuition, patience and taking many shots of maybe just one flower and deleting those that I don't like...I have a very simple camera and no professional reference to provide (i.e - fstops, photo shop use, lens use, etc.) on which I can improve. Any suggestions?
Dick Anderson 02-Dec-2009 22:48

Mike, your macro work is really impressive. I really liked your leaf gallery, especially how the right things were sharp, and how you captured the irridescence of the water in some of the shots. Great work.
Mike Moats21-Nov-2009 16:19
Hey Marc, I use photoshop elements and Nik software products. If you are looking to get into the Nik software stuff I can get you 15% off with my promo code, let me know if your interested and I'll give you the code. Mike, your photographs are truly breathtaking. Could you comment on the software you use to process your images? Lightroom? Photoshop? Sharpening software? Noise reduction? Have you ever displayed your work at the Three Rivers Arts Festival in Pittsburgh?

Hi, Mike! Found your site through your introduction in the "Art, Design & Photography in Interior Design" group on LinkedIn.

These are great! Definitely going to be spending some time here, soaking up your style, gleaning nuggets of wisdom (or horse-sense), and so on.

Hi Mike - Love your style. What would be the first step in having photos published in magazines? How did you get recognized to acquire this?
Mike Moats25-Apr-2009 20:11
Thanks Richard, I do use the wireless credit system and am all set for now. I'll keep you in mind if anything changes with my provider.
Guest 25-Apr-2009 19:24
I noticed that you readily participate in Art Fairs/Expos to display but hopefully and more importantly - to sell your beautiful works!

In this economy, more and more people are using their credit cards instead of cash. .If you don’t already utilize a wireless credit card processing system or are unhappy with one that you may have, may I suggest you look into our affordable and totally mobile/wireless easy to use system. You will make more sales right on the spot if you have a wireless credit card processing system at your fingertips.

With the upcoming summers of Fairs and Expos taking place, now is the best time to get an easy to use and extremely affordable system in place for your next exhibit. We offer a free 30 day trial so you can make sure this is the right solution for you.

Mike, I have visited many art shows throughout the past 15 years, but I was more impressed with your images than those of any of the other photographers I have during that time. Your skill in composition, color, lighting, texture and detail is truly inspiring. It was such a pleasure meeting you and learning about your photography.

Hi Mike,
Thanks again for your time in looking at my work and being
complimentary. You have a nice lot of images which is reflected
with all the views you have received from other photographers and
guests. My site traffic has been picking up a bit but I need to
add new material on a more regular basis. I will try to address
that short fall in the future. Thanks again for your visual
patronage!
Cheers - Tom Bailey
