This steering wheel is the second spoke design created by Gerry Coker. The rim was produced in the same method as the first 100S wheels, with solid wood segments and 24 rivets. All of these wheels were made in the shop by Roger Menadue and an assistant. There were very few produced. I have witnessed only three; one on Mr. Healey's personal Austin-Healey coupe; one on NOJ 393, the factory 100S involved in the tragic crash at Le Mans in 1955; and the first production 100S off the line.
This spoke was later modified by increasing the flare where the spoke meets the wood rim, was covered by a bent spiral beech rim by Coventry Timber Bending, and was offered as an option on 100 series cars. Please see my 100M blog for more on that wheel.
