This trip was based around the deepwater pelagic out of Santa Barbara. I had 3.5 other days to bird though, and I covered from San Diego north to the Mt. Pinos area.
Major areas birded were:
Day 1: LA area (Bolsa Chica, Upper Newport Bay, Laguna Beach)
Day 2: Maricopa, Mt. Pinos area, Alisal Canyon Rd, Happy Canyon Rd
Day 3: Pelagic
Day 4: San Bernadino Mountains, then to San Diego to Robb Field and then the Vaux's Swift roost downtown
Day 5: Laguna Mountains, then north thru Santa Ysabel and Mesa Grande, to the Garner Valley and San Jacinto Mountains.
During this time I racked up almost 1600 miles on my rental, and wasted very little daylight. I had a total of 16 lifers or ABA birds for the trip, counting the 7 on the pelagic. Being only my 2nd trip to the west coast, many of these birds were being seen for only the 2nd or 3rd time, so it was great to get more familiar with others in addition to the lifers. In this gallery I have photos of 74 species.
