California Gull

Lake Co. TN

The right-hand bird sleeping on the center island is an adult California Gull.

Of note in the photograph is the larger size compared to surrounding Ring-bills, very conspicuous tertial and scapular cresecents, and long wings with 4 primary tips past the end of the tail. The bird has the nice hood often shown by California, but others also. Not apparent in the photo is that the legs were yellowish, and the bill had the black and red markings of California.

Jeff 1st picked this bird up, and we subsequently spent a lot of time with it, before nailing all but one of the field marks. We never could be sure of the eye color at the distance we were at, and with the bird sleeping and preening most of the time. Subsequent observations proved the eye to be a muddy brown, a little lighter than normal for California, but within range.
