The diminutive size of this male Blue-winged Teal is apparent is comparison to the hen Mallard beside him. These are among the easiest of ducks to identify (outside of eclipse plumage), with the gunmetal gray head and white crescent before the eye. The white hip-patch also stands out at long-range against the finely patterned brownish underparts. Females, as usual, are much plainer.
