Short-billed Dowitchers & Lesser Yellowlegs

Ed Davis Fish Farm; Gibson Co TN

A peregrine put all of these birds up, and luckily the Dowitchers came right over me, fairly low.

An interesting ID point is visible in these photos. If you notice that on the birds where the lesser coverts are visible, they are patterned and uniform with the rest of the wing coverts. On Long-billed, the lesser coverts are unmarked white, and contrast with the rest of the underwing. This difference is visible in even this distant shot of a flock of Long-billed Dowitchers taken earlier this month at Reelfoot. http://www.pbase.com/mctodd/image/111740947
