Alma de Bretteville Spreckles built the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in the 1920's to promote French art in California. It was inspired by the Palais de la Légion d'Honneur in Paris. The glass pyramid skylight, a more recent addition, is a miniature of the Louvre's.
