What is DLC
Downloadable content (DLC) is extra content created for a video game that has already been released and distributed via the internet by the game’s publisher. It can be included for free or as a way for the publisher to profit from a game after it has been purchased, typically through a microtransaction system.
DLC can include anything from skins to new characters, levels, and game modes. Larger expansions that add more to the original game are also possible. Some games offer a “season pass” that includes all DLC, even if it hasn’t yet been released. This is usually less expensive than purchasing each DLC separately.
Even though Dreamcast was the first home console to support DLC, its hardware and internet connection limited its ability. Microsoft’s Xbox console and Xbox Live helped popularise the concept. DLC has been available on most major gaming systems connected to the internet since the seventh generation of video game consoles.
Since the popularity of microtransactions on online platforms such as Steam, the term “DLC” has come to refer to any paid content in video games, whether it’s downloading new content or something else. As a result, the term “on-disc DLC” was coined to describe content already present in the game’s original files but hidden behind a paywall.
