Baby Pileated Woodpecker

Sometimes Mother Nature seems cruel. While I was trying to photograph the Pileated Woodpecker I kept hearing a noise in the leaves. At first I thought it was a squirrel. Then I caught a glimps of what I thought was a full grown bird. As I kept moving to try and get the Pileated Woodpecker I started to smell something that was dead. When I looked around there were 3 dead baby Pileated Woodpeckers and this single live one walking around. When I saw the baby I knew why the mother had been flying in circles and diving around me while trying to stay close to the ground. While this made getting a clear shot impossible with all the limbs I realized she was trying to protect her single living baby. I don't know for sure why they were on the ground but I'm thinking another bird has knocked them out of their nest or they fell since these birds nest in dead trees. I highly doubt this baby will survive because of all the preditors around the area. This part of the lake is known for Cottonmouth Snakes and Rattlesnakes. I did not touch the baby and knew better than to try and help since the mother would not help if the baby had the smell of humans.
