Rodin's monumental masterpiece, The Gates of Hell, a door decorated with low reliefs inspired by The Divine Comedy of Dante. Ignoring two thirds of the poem by Dante, he concentrated on its darkest side. It only retains a few identifiable characters; Paolo and Francesca, Ugolino and his Children, The Shades, and The Thinker, a portrayal of Dante himself.
