Elegant Cliveden House in Buckinghamshire has always made the news. From the rakish scandals of the 2nd Duke of Buckingham in the 17th century to the social elite which gathered around Viscount Astor and his wife Nancy in the 20th, it has been a centre of power and pleasure - and never more dramatically than when a top Tory politician espied a young woman swimming naked in the pool in 1961. The politician was John Profumo, Harold Macmillan's Secretary of State for War, and his affair with call-girl Christine Keeler triggered a government crisis.
