The Route du Fromage in the upper Vosges mountains is one of France’s least expensive and least touristed territories. Over 60 of the farms that take in guests along the route have formed an association and publish a booklet (Association des Fermes Auberges du Haut-Rhin.
Call first to guarantee a room or meal. Prices range from $21 to $75 a night. Farm chores are not required, but offering to help is a great way to ingratiate yourself with the locals.
