Tara's name means, "One Who Saves." Tara was born from a tear of the Boddhisattva of Compassion, Avalokiteshvara. She was conceived primarily as a savioress and is, therefore, the female counterpart of Avalokiteshvara. She is also generally regarded as his consort and is frequently protrayed with him. Tara is believed to protect human beings as they cross the ocean of existence. Her compassion for living beings, her desire to save them from suffering, is said to be stronger than a mother's love for her children. Her most distinctive emblem is the blue lotus which she carries in her left hand. Among the forms of Tara: when she is red, yellow and blue, she is in menacing mood; white or green she is gentle and loving.
Green Tara
Green Tara is known as the Buddha whom one can call upon to ease fear and worry. Repeating the mantras of Green Tara can overcome anxiety, fear, and suffering. The mantra most often said is:
Om Tare
Tu Tare
Ture Soha
Tara
The Sanskrit root "tar" means to "go across" as in fording a stream, indicating that Tara is one who carries one across the seas of delusion and suffering, and/or that she, from her heavenly abode, crosses back into our world to relieve beings of their suffering and fear.
Tara represents the active and energetic aspect of compassion.
She is depicted as being as white as the blinding snows when the sunlight hits them, symbolizing the impartial rays of kindness which fall on all beings from Tara. Tara's seven eyes stand for her perception of the suffering of beings, and her work to ease that suffering. Her two eyes in the place we usually have eyes represent her awareness of suffering that is apparent. Tara's third eye in her forehead represents her awareness of suffering that is hidden deep within beings. The eyes in her palms represent her seeing and simultaneously easing the suffering of beings literally "by her own hand" and The eyes in the soles of her feet represent her moving toward beings out of her great compassion. Whereas many deities ask beings to do much to deserve mercy, Tara comes to you out of her unbelievable kindness!
Lakshmi, also called Laxmi, is the goddess of wealth, fortune, power, luxury, beauty, fertility, and auspiciousness. She holds the promise of material fulfillment and contentment. She is described as restless, whimsical yet maternal, with her arms raised to bless and to grant her blessings.
Lakshmi represents the beautiful and bountiful aspect of nature. As Bhoodevi, the earth-goddess, she nurtures life; as Shreedevi, the goddess of fortune, she bestows power, pleasure and prosperity on those who deserve her grace. To realize her, one must respect the laws of life and appreciate the wonders of existence.
