Morris clock tower

Shrewsbury, England

This street is normally packed with parked cars. I had to get up very early to take this shot! Morris lubricants have been blending oils for machinery since 1869 in the good old days of steam. The 'Speed the Plough' sign which can be seen above the building is a phrase derived from 'God speed the plough' a wish for success or prosperity. It was originally a phrase in a 15th-century song sung by ploughmen on Plough Monday, the first Monday after Twelfth Day, which is the end of the Christmas holidays, when farm laborers returned to the plough. On this day ploughmen customarily went from door to door dressed in white and drawing a plough, soliciting 'plough money' to spend in celebration. Some people believe that this is where the phrase 'God speed' comes from.

good that you arrived before the cars..they would have been a distraction in front of this venerable building...intriguing bit of history too..returning to the fields so early in the year must have meant tough ploughing for the lads...V
