Lord Hill, was born in 1772. A most distinguished soldier in the Napoleonic War, most especially in Spain, where his successes were commemorated in Shrewsbury by the erection of the Lord Hill Column said to be the highest Doric column in the world. He was second in command to the Duke of Wellington at the battle of Waterloo in 1815.
