Empty

I am planning a new photographic venture which will see me documenting the street where I work. It will take me out of my comfort zone as, to do it properly, I will need to take portraits of some of the shopkeepers and businesspeople on the street. There's a good sense of community on the street and I've got to know many of the people who work in the shops, restaurants and businesses. It's a matter of plucking up the courage to ask them if I can take their photograph. But I feel it's important as the recession has brought changes to the street and several shops have closed in the last four years.
These shiny new and unused bicycle stands have been erected by the Town Council as part of a Smarter Travel project to encourage people to leave their cars at home and walk or cycle to work and school. Safe to say it hasn't proven very successful to date, apart from annoying motorists when streets are narrowed to accommodate cycle lanes.
The empty shop was once a branch of Dunnes Stores, a very successful Irish grocery and fashion store. As the company has three other stores in town they closed this one, immediately removing one of the street's major attractions. Since then three coffee shops/cafes have closed, as well as a couple of clothes shops, a bank and a video rental store.

This is the beginning of some sad but true tales...I'm sure you will handle it with much professionalism, Mairéad

Great composition and tones to suit the mood Mairead...Can you believe they are making cycle tracks for miles out here on our Islands...crazy because the road definately needs widening and its a very rare sight to see a cyclist anyway...Hope your main Street survives and no more shops close...BV

Fine idea, this is a great start. Looking forward to more! I like the Oly Pen's BW for this job too. V

consumer confidence seems to have been seriously eroded here....although it can be problematic to bring home the shopping on a bike...sounds a fascinating project you have in mind..

I guess "If you build it, they will come."* does not always work. I like the point of view and black & white works well here. V Good luck on your project.

*A misquote from "Field of Dreams", it actually was "If you build it, he will come."

The story of Main Street in every small town. Great street photo using the empty bicycle racks to tell the message. V.

I like the idea of your challenge and I'm looking forward to meeting some of the shopkeepers.
Sometime the economy will pick-up, let's hope it's not too late to revive local shops.

A lot of that going around, even down here. There's barely a day goes by without stories of 4 figure job losses. (CEO: "To you losing your jobs is devastating, to me it's a bonus".)
The grey suits the mood very well, not to mention the emptiness of the steel... I would presume bike racks..

Great with this perspective, tones and grain. "V"
