There was welcome sunshine after the rain today. But not for the family of the young off-duty garda (policeman) swept away by floodwaters as he tried to warn motorists of a dangerous bridge or for the family of the Filipino woman drowned in a basement, or the hundreds of people whose homes and businesses were flooded in Dublin yesterday. Almost three and a half inches feel on the capital in six hours yesterday, equivalent to the average rainfall for the whole month of October. The city's drainage system couldn't cope and rivers burst their banks with devastating consequences. The Irish weather is often miserable but rarely so lethal.
