Slainte or Bah Humbug?

Today is Arthur's Day or so those clever marketing people at Guinness would have you believe. Having commemorated the 250th anniversary on the brewery on September 22nd 2009, the company seem hellbent on making it an annual event, not just in Ireland, but around the world. Sure enough, people associate a pint of Guinness with Ireland, the same way as I associate a glass of Chianti with Tuscany or port with Portugal. The pub is seen as an integral part of Irish culture, especially for visiting tourists, but the relatively high cost of drink here (due largely to hefty taxes and excise duties) means that many locals are turning their back on the pub and drinking at home. The recession has seen many pubs, once seen as goldmines, struggling for survival. And our love affair with the 'black stuff', 'uaisce beatha' and all other forms of alcohol has its downside too, with high levels of alcoholism and worrying rates of teenage drinking being a national concern.

It must be getting desperate when pubs close down...good narrative Mairead

I noticed several old landmark pubs closed this week, the same thing is happening here.

This is a beautifully composed image Mairead!
Hard times are hitting us all over the world.... :((

I love the "black stuff". The first time I had a pint of draft Guinness was in Ireland and it cured my upset stomach. It is too bad that pubs are having a hard time. Drinking at home, in the long run is , I think, likely to cause more drinking. Going out for a 'couple' is a part of the Irish tradition (so is teetotaling ) and I hope this social tradition does not fade away. A beautiful presentation in this photos. V

Times are changing. Mass marketing and mass production takes away everything that is "neighborhood" or "local". Many creative or original ideas have come from conversations in the pub, over a beer. Drinking alone is never a good idea. I just love this photo with the flowers and sign. Very colorful and a great narrative today. Thought-provoking stuff! V

Nice shot of the iconic sign and an interesting narrative. As I don't live within walking distance of a pub, my bar fly days are long over, but back in the day I loved sitting at our local watering hole shooting the breeze with my assorted pals, kicking back a few drafts and smoking a lot of cigarettes. I must say I don't miss that at all, but it was (at least at the time) a fun phase to go through as this particular bar was in downtown Washington, DC and at any given time there were journalists, diplomats, government officials, artists, professors, attorneys, lobbyists, writers, of many different nationalities there. Certainly had many interesting conversations there and met some fascinating people.

Great snapshot and story, the same here with many country pubs in decline. v

An interesting narrative. It is sad to see the pubs vanishing as they have been such an integral part of life in Ireland. Nonetheless, a very arresting image. V

Same where I grew up - I went home a few years ago and half of my old watering holes had become houses or hotels. An interesting narrative if somewhat sobering!

Plenty of out-of-town pubs suffering here too. Town centre pubs seem as busy as ever at weekends. Have to admit I've not heard of Arthur's Day.
