A Vulture's Haul

I felt like a vulture, not a culture vulture, just an ordinary scavenging vulture when I went to the closing down sale of the town's best bookshop.
This, in fact, was its second closing down and must be particularly difficult for the staff, some of whom are losing their jobs for the second time. Bookstores everywhere are experiencing difficulties with competition coming from all quarters, from supermarkets to downloads. Shops in a border town like Dundalk have an added difficulty as books are cheaper in Northern Ireland due to tax and currency differences.
Other vultures had been there before me so I hadn't a huge selection of books to choose from but I still picked up a few copies for our new bookcase.

Yes, we've had more than a few booksellers go under here as well though some of them have re-emerged as on line only stores. Even the Notting Hill bookshop (of the film of that name) was reported to be closing down in the next week or two. I think that the "sunset" style light emphasises the background story.

Seems to be happening everywhere! We are clinging to our very atmospheric two book shops in West End, but no doubt they are feeling the pinch. I like the subject for a still life. Well done.

I know exactly how you feel! I buy books rarely via Internet and feel bad about it but most of the time I use the local book store. Love your collection and your shot . V!

Wonderful lighting in this still life. We just had Borders the biggest book store chain here declare bankruptcy. Books are harder to come by. A sad testament to the times.

a good pick might have been Liam O'Flaherty's short stories hidden here behind the eggs...several bookshops have closed over here too, their demise hastened by a large chain that itself is now stocking other goods and fewer books...luckily my favourite, a small store, is still thriving..

The joy of the hunt! It's always exciting to see what treasures await at a book sale. A wonderful image in what appears to be late-afternoon light. Time to sit down and read!

A beautiful still life, wonderfully composed. I understand how you felt at the bookstore. A local, independently owned bookstore in Ottawa closed last summer and it was so sad. They'd been here for decades, a terrific selection of books, but the competition from online sales and the Kindle factor, finally did them in.
