A bit of excitement...and a bit of a miracle

Gale force winds sent the chimney of this old Georgian building crashing
onto the footpath below in Dundalk town centre yesterday morning.
Miraculously no one was injured - just half an hour earlier and the street
would have been busy with children walking to school and workers going
to their jobs. An emergency exercise was put in place, residents and workers
in nearby buildings evacuated, and traffic diversions put in place. Work also
got underway in removing the rest of the chimney as well as chimneys on
other buildings for fear that they too would collapse.

Nice bit of photojournalism. Looking at how slender some of the stacks are, its amazing that they've stood so long! V

Well captured! Great colours.

That was such good luck that no one was hurt. I agree that this shot is a winner in the photo journalism department. Very nicely balanced image that tells the story quite well even without your excellent story. ~V~

Hard to imagine winds that strong. What luck no one was standing there.

Good journalistic photo. So fortunate that no one was injured.

Heatwaves in Sydney, floods in Victoria, cyclones in Queensland and gale force winds in Ireland. Now, hopefully, for a bit of moderate weather for a while as we start to move into autumn and you into spring. Good arrangement with this shot; the angle of the truck from there lads back to the fallen bricks, and the two viewers on the right both balance it and emphasise the direction of the "action". (Well, past action anyway.)

Too bad, to lose the old architecture. But thank goodness no one was hurt!!! Nice reporting, Mairead!

A wonderful reportage shot Mairead...when you look at the picture first you can't wait
to read the description to find out the story. V

Near miss or what?

They do look a bit like sails - especially the two thin ones on the ends. Wouldn't like to have been wandering around when that lot came down...

that could really have been bad.... hope everything else is secure
