As the cold spell continues, the Army has been called in to clear the frozen snow of the streets
in many towns around the country. Although there was only a little snow last night, the streets
were very slippery and as the local authority no longer has large numbers of outdoor staff,
the Army were called upon to clear the streets in the town centre. In other parts of the country
where the snowfalls have been heavier, they are helping doctors and nurses to deliver vital
medicines to patients who cannot get to hospitals or clinics. With snow falling as I write,
they might very well be out clearing the streets tomorrow.
It is rare, I must add, for Ireland to get any sort of significant snow falls so we are not geared
up for coping with the wintery conditions which it brings.
