Bail Out

A week, they say, is a long time in politics. In Ireland, it's a day that's long.
Last week the Government denied that they were negotiating a bail out.
They were' having discussions about arrangements', as they put it.
Then the Governor of the Central Bank told the truth, the EU big wigs flew in,
and finally, last night, the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) admitted that we were getting a
helping hand from the European Union, the European Central
Bank, and the IMF. Today, the Green Party, the minority party in
government, complained that they too had been kept in the dark, and
demanded that an election be held before the end of January. The
opposition parties say it should be sooner, so watch this space.
There is real anger as people fear that the cost of the bail out will be
a severe budget with the minimum wage being lowered and social
welfare cuts. As usual, those who least afford it will be made pay
while the fat cats get off the hook.
And if the paper looks crumpled it's because I had to rescue it from
the jaws of Fudge who has taken to chewing cushions, books and
newspapers with abandon.

I think Fudge has the right idea - chew over the politicians and the bankers!!

it could be hard times again and more's the pity..the paper's disarray (well done Fudge)suits the messy state of things, and the IT's image of the PM catches a perfect perplexed and panicky look from a man under fire and a nation under assault..

Fudge must have been disgusted after reading this. Just imagine what he'll be able to do to the "fat cats" when he gets a little bigger!

It seems politicians are the same everywhere...why can't we find leaders that have honesty, integrity and courage
to use common sense and to do the right and not necessarily the popular thing. V

Blame the "quants", blame the pols who relaxed regulations, blame the banks, or take your pick. The bottom line of all of this has been unchecked Greed, an animal that knew no boundaries, had no language barriers, or any self control whatsoever. Now we all pay. One thing is certain: today's kids will be *much* better investing their money!

Hopefully you'll all come out of this a stronger nation.

It may be the "free market economy" as Walter says, but it's probably more the crooked slobs we put in office because we have no other choice. Sad. Hang in there Mairead.

Unfortunately, this is a world wide epidemic.
Fudge has the right idea!

So, where were the Economists who were supposed to give warning about this? They weren't here either when the housing market heated up and the property prices doubled in five or so years, and then when it came crashing down hard afterward. There is obviously something very wrong about the so called "Free Market Economy", when economies can go from hot to cold in a matter of months and the few benefit and the masses pay.

I've been following the story too. I hope that your Ireland will be able to recover. Sooner than later, the middleclass will be wiped out... not just in your country, but everywhere.

Maybe it's Fudge's idea of political commentary. The crumpling seems apposite to the story, somehow. As indeed is this shot, though I'm hoping that the candle represents a light of hope rather than a symbol of returning to oil lamps and having to cook over fires until the economy recovers...

I heard the trailer for the Jeremy Vine show on R2 this morning - the halfwit was inviting Irish people to ring in an thank the English for chipping in... I didn't stay tunded!

And of course all this provides a great stage for naive British eurosceptic politicians...

We are hearing a lot about this in Canada. It is a seriously difficult time. I hope Ireland can come through this stronger than ever.
