Not so much autumn as winter. Rain, wind, cold. A brief lull
between the lunchtime downpours allowed me
to nip up the street to one of the last remaining stretches of old
cobblestones in town where some autumn leaves had gathered.
11/11 - the day when the Western World remembers those who
died in the World Wars and other conflicts. It's only now that
Irish people are beginning to speak about those Irishmen who
died fighting with the British Army. Their sacrifices were
unmentionable for many years.
I don't believe in wars but the
loss of life, so many young lives, saddens me.
There is a 'memory card' somewhere in our house remembering
a distant forgotten relative, a young man born in Co Down, who
died fighting with the American air force just days before
the end of the First World War.
