Emigration has had a huge impact on Irish society ever since thousands of people fled
our shores to escape the Great Hunger of 1848. They endured terrible conditions on board
the Coffin Ships which brought the emigrants to America and many didn't
survive the journey as disease was rife amid the crowded quarters below deck.
Emigration remained part of Irish life throughout the 19th and 20th centuries as
people left in search of prosperity in England, America, Canada, Australia and
New Zealand.
Now, a new generation is in danger of being lost as the Celtic Tiger is but a distant
and bitter memory with the Irish economy suffering severely in the recession.
Picture taken at event organised by the Greenore Historical Association and the
Killowen Historical Society on the shores of Carlingford Lough.

I'd hate to think this comment is in any way was construed as saying the emigration was a good thing. Certainly it was an immediate tragedy for the people involved. Yet when you see what the Irish contributed to the countries they went to, and on a personal note, what my wife's family achieved in 4 generations, you can see that out of tragedy came success and fulfillment.

A superb image and a powerful memory. Here in the Ottawa valley, the Irish presence is very strong... most came over during the great famine and eventually settled in the valley. V

This is a lovely and evocative composition, Mairead. My family is unusual as my mother's uncle emmigrated from London to Dublin a few years before independence.

powerful indeed...the sad history of mass emigration from Ireland is brought home by these two tender souls, in appropriate costume, apparently transfixed by that sailing ship...where will it take us?...V
