Mystery of the Standing Stones

I have finally solved the mystery of the standing stones. I had guessed that
they were not an ancient monument as I had never heard of them and goggling
various historical or archaeological pages found no trace of them. So I eventually
asked a friend whose husband is a keen hillwalker and he reckons they were
erected in the last ten years or so. I am not sure why they, and a nearby
'Dolmen' were put up but it's possibly because they are close to the course of the
Poc Fada, an annual competition where hurling players hit a 'poc' or ball
across the mountain with a hurly stick.
Whatever the reason, they make for very interesting photographs!

A super place for a walk across the hills, and those stones and dolmen are fascinating.

oh... tee hee... I wonder how many 'ancient' works are actually like this. Thanks for the update!

Mystery solved. Or somewhat solved. Although we know they are a relatively new addition to the landscape, you must still wonder "why". However, a little mystery is alway good in life. I love seeing the overall scene. What a breathtaking landscape.

Great POV to show the context of the stones' location. Wonderful shot of the stones and the valley below.

In 3000 years time someone will be looking for an explanation too, i'm sure.
So hopefully Pbase will still be going strong and you'll have kept your subscription going Mairead.

LOL@Cathryn!!! Love that strong slash of a diagonal splitting the frame in two...very effective composition

Maybe you have some "born again" Pagans thereabouts?!? Nevertheless they make for a great image with that stunning view as a backdrop!

Cathryn might have a point, and it works. Nice shot.

I suspect they were erected by a gang of photographers who thought, 'Hmm. This scene needs a little foreground interest.'
