The Remorseful Day

by Colin Dexter

I loved Inspector Morse: firstly on reading the Colin Dexter books
as they were published and subsequently as John Thaw
took on his character in the television series.
I loved his crankiness, his cleverness, his obsession with crosswords,
his passion for music, and his vulnerability in his human relationships.
While the Morse novels appeared to be crime novels they were far more than that.
They had the ability to touch the reader deeply.
This one is the last in the series, and is a truly absorbing read for all lovers of the Morse series.
Colin Dexter has served his readers well.

I'm with you on this! I thoroughly enjoy Colin Dexter's work and have watched the Morse series over and over. John Thaw was perfect in the role, conveying the, as you say, crankiness of the character well.

Here is a writer who has fascinated me over and over. John Thaw was always top notch.

I'd second the comment about the lighting here. It's suggestive of one of those cloudy or rainy afternoon reading sessions. I read all of the Morse books quite a few years ago now... except this one. I have it, but haven't been able to bring myself to start it.

I like the lighting in this - adds an appropriate touch of mystery.

Máire you have done an excellent job of summarizing my own feeling about the Inspector Morse books. I was once told I looked like Morse/Thaw and and when my wife and I visited England I was hoping that someone would mistake me for Morse or Thaw, but alas no such luck. The Mose mysteries have always been my favorites and I loved the TV versions.

I can only second your words. There is a nugget of wisdom in each of these novels and John Thaw was the perfect actor to bring it home.
