In this case, I was lazy and simply used the auto levels tool in Photoshop. I then used Photoshop's History brush at 18% to repaint any overexposed white blowouts caused by the auto levels.
It doesn't always work, so I try auto contrast to see which is better. If I'm not satisfied with either, then I use curves or other Photoshop tools to correct the colours and contrast.
