John and his family helped out staving miners and sell them potatoes after their crops failed. He moved up there from his ranch near " Stayman Flats" after the big earthquack of 1872 which " Dammed" the Columbia River And flodded his ranch out. His log cabin floated away and nearly his family with it. He moved to Wapato Point for the rest of his life.
