These photos were taken three weeks before September 11th, 2004. We were in NYC for a wedding. While visiting the WTC site, we were suddenly caught in a thunderstorm. Seeking shelter, we ran across the street to an intriguing old church. The church was St. Paul’s Chapel with its small cemetery, flowers and protective old trees. It is literally across the street from where the towers stood. The parish is the oldest public building in NYC, (President George Washington worshiped there), and it miraculously survived the devastation unscathed. In fact, the parish quickly became a respite for rescuers.
To this day, the walls are covered with messages from schoolchildren around the world to the victims and survivors. The stubborn little sanctuary, though surrounded by fear and uncertainty, continues to provide hope and solace...

This is all so very familiar to me...St. Pauls' was a "way station" for the volunteers and I I was one of them...It is heartening to note that the site is a bustling place once again filled with activity and the voices of life...a wonderful gallery of images of my city. Thanks, Tony, for posting them!!
