The old, brownish lava in the foreground has been around for quite a while. It is even capable of supporting a modicum of vegetation. The newer, black lava flow in the distance (only a couple hundred years old, if memory serves) had no trouble rolling right over whatever used to grow there. A forlorn-looking landscape, indeed, yet less forbidding than many vistas on the Big Island, where there is only lava as far as the eye can see.
