Christmastime on King William Street

King William Historic District, San Antonio TX The King William Historic District is located south of downtown San Antonio on the east side of the San Antonio River.
This 25 sq. block area was a fashionable neighborhood popular with German immigrants.
King William Street was originally named for Kaiser Wilhelm I of Prussia.
Although the King William Area suffered a decline over a period of several decades in the 20th century,
the historical significance of the neighborhood was eventually recognized. In 1967, it achieved
the distinction of becoming Texas' first Historic Neighborhood District.
These photos represent only a few of the many interesting homes located in the district.

Mrs. Steves lived in one of the Steves' homes when I was a child, and my grandmother managed the Kalteyer house during it's life as an apartment house. My grandmother became friends with Mrs. Steves, and one afternoon Mrs. Steves took us to the Steves Homestead. I can't tell which is the Homestead from the photos, but I reckon it is the oldest of the houses. Preserved as a museum, the nursery was full of toys and books. Mrs. Steves encouraged me to explore the nursery, and it is likely that I was the last child to play with the toys in that nursery. You can see the comments of my Aunt Becky McKeehan here too.

I have a special connection with the Kalteyer house. My son-in-law is a great, great, etc., nephew of Mr. Kalteyer. I don't know how long after Mr. Kalteyer passed away that the family sold the house. Fast forward to the 1960's and most of the King William Street Homes had fallen into disrepair. The Kalteyer house had become a boarding house and my Mother became the manager. I was fortunate to have lived with her for four months in that beautiful house. Her apartment was the first floor apartment with the bay window. Now fast forward to the late 1980's. My daughter and I were attending a craft show in a small town in Texas. I am an artist so I was drawn to a booth that had paintings of only beautiful houses and I spied one of the Kalteyer House and so did she. At the same time we turned to each other and I said " I don't think you remember, but your Nanna lived in that house for several years and when you were little we lived with her when she was ill". She, at the same time, was telling me that her husbands great, great, etc. uncle had built the house. The artist heard us talking and joined us. He very kindly gave my daughter a huge discount on the painting which now hangs in her living room. I do know that the house was sold again and restored to its orginal beauty. Well seen and captured pictures in this gallery. In one of your other galleries (cars) you wrote "If I only were rich". This is what I am thinking when looking at these beautiful houses. But what is beauty if it not seen or captured on photos? Your photos are rich! Thanks for sharing. (Voted)
