Dead Santa Fe Locos

Galveston Island, Texas

BNSF Railroad owns large tracts of land near the Port of Galveston, including the area where these locomotives are being stored.
Some of these are going to be sold to other countries and shipped off, while others will be sold for scrap.
Burlington Northern Railroad merged with the Santa Fe Railroad in 1995, so these two engines in the foreground are older than that.
They never got the new paint jobs with BNSF livery. The bright red Santa Fe color has faded to pink in the hot sun.

AN IGNOMINIUS END ......

So sad! Pride of the fleet in 1993, a General Electric C40-8W that has seen many miles.

what a beautiful train and photo V

I love trains, nice shot of these derelict locomotives. The Burlington Northern Railroad has a long and interesting history in Minnesota, a direct descendent of the Northern Pacific Railway that was headquartered in St. Paul from 1864 to 1970.

Seems so sad to see these machines left to decay. V

What a shame to think some of these are destined for scrap, I'm sure they could be saved but maybe it's not economic to do so....
Apostolos Tikopoulos02-Aug-2021 17:26
So nice image of this old powerful machine. V.
Walter Otto Koenig02-Aug-2021 14:52

Very nice capture, it had to be a powerful machine, Vote.
Raymond02-Aug-2021 13:45
Probably has millions of miles on the counter!
Tom LeRoy02-Aug-2021 11:22
It probably had a long life, now retired from service. A fine shot of this veteran loco. V

A reminder of days gone by.
Chris02-Aug-2021 05:14
There is something sad about this image, such power that is now outdated and left to the elements.
joseantonio02-Aug-2021 03:36
a very nice capture with a lovely perspective.V.

It's seen a few rails in its day...I like it's scars

This is such a great shot, and of course, perfect for the movie title. V
Helen Betts02-Aug-2021 01:01
Definitely seen better days! I liked the pink lettering, didn't realize it had just faded from red. V.
Dan Greenberg02-Aug-2021 00:19
Super cool image Lynn! I need to go there. ~BV~

It's hard to believe that 1995 is over 25 years ago now. Harder still to believe that such an investment in time, money and technical skill can just be left to age in the sun for a quarter of a century. It's an interesting story, though.

a well weathered veteran, yet it still has a mighty presence..
