A scone in Scone!

27 July 2004

98.
Annoyed with myself for not finding two castles yesterday evening, I decided to buy new Ordnance Survey maps this morning. castle hunting is a serious business that requires forward planning. Thus resolved, I sat in a coffee shop and scanned my new maps of the surrounding area for old castles. Once found, their position was duly noted and a route planned. Back home I was pleasantly surprised to discover that both Linda and Liam wanted to join me. They didn't mind castle hunting, as long as they got to see some nice countryside, stretch their legs, treated to coffee and scones (pron. sgones), and got to visit Scone Palace (pron. skoon). It was a deal, and off we went to Pitcur, then through the Ballo Glack from the Sidlaws to the Braes of the Carse. We retraced our tracks and found both castles, Kinnaird and Fingask, that we missed yesterday. Satisfied, we drove to Scone Palace and got in for free (on account of my Glasgow accent!). There we spent a pleasant hour or so, before we set off again on towards Blairgowrie, where there are at least four ruined castles, and where I wanted to survey the land for future hunting expeditions. Oh... did I say that it was scorching hot and very humid? Well, it was. Perfect.

Do they call it Devonshire tea in Scotland too ? Looks like a date scone...very yummy, but so are pumpkin, potato or just plain ones.
To go on a castle hunt is the ultimate dream I have.

Oh, this looks so good. I love scones, and all I have ever had are "Texas style" scones. How lovely to have at least a photo of the real thing. Thanks.

Nice shot.

Very nice shot -- beautifully lit and composed. I want some! (And is "hot" for you about 80 degrees? * snort * (we've been in the 90's recently, so excuse my insolence -- it's just heatstroke. It's really the humidity that gets me.))
Interesting business, hunting castles; the prospect of a good walk and treat like this would normally appeal to me more, but there's something about things that don't want to be found that is irresistable.

The coffee looks good too.

Well, I think the next PaD meeting should be an organized castle hunt. You're elected tour guide.

Well a couple of days ago I was thinking of posting something along the lines of pre-season friendlies not mattering one jot; but with my team having put your team to the sword in spectacular fashion, I'm thinking of revising my opinion. Lol. I hope this doesn't put you in a bad mood, after what you aptly descibed as a perfect day. Generous helpings of jam you get up there :)
